Portfolio-Priced Privacy Analytics
Cookie-free web analytics for indie makers with many small sites: one bill for pooled pageviews, one-click pause for idle sites, single-binary self-host.
Founder thesis
Fathom and Matomo charge per pageview tier and each plan carries a site count, so owners of many small sites keep paying for sites that sit idle. I bet a portfolio bill, pooled pageviews and a pause button win those buyers, and a single-binary self-host path keeps ingestion near the $6 VPS a Plausible clone already runs on. The category already pays: Fathom self-reports thousands of paying customers and a profitable bootstrapped business.
What others got wrong
Entry-tier price hikes breed distrust. Plausible's lowest tier moved $4 to $9/month across successive increases, and one HN commenter called it 'upping prices by double-digit % every couple months is just greediness'.
Plausible prices per site, so owners of idle side projects keep paying for traffic that does not exist. One commenter wrote, 'So it just sits there and I'm actually paying money for that just to exists.'
Mailchimp newsletter links tagged with mc_cid/mc_eid land in Direct/None instead of being credited to Mailchimp. The GitHub discussion quote: "All referred traffic shows it as 'Direct / None'".
Self-hosting Plausible is heavy enough that a user ported the dashboard to a Golang single binary with zero runtime dependencies to run it on cheap hardware.
What should work
Bill one account, not a site. Pool pageviews across the portfolio and let owners pause idle sites, the exact fix the idle-payment complaint asks for.
Bundle sites the way Fathom does: every Fathom plan includes at least 50 sites, so multi-site owners already expect it. Pooled counting plus pause is the step Fathom has not taken.
Ship a single-binary self-host build. A compatible Golang clone runs the dashboard on a $6 Vultr instance with zero runtime dependencies, so parity is proven cheap.
Tag Mailchimp traffic at ingest so mc_cid/mc_eid show as Mailchimp rather than Direct/None.
What kills it
- Fathom already bundles at least 50 sites per plan, so the portfolio pitch is partly solved.
- Matomo Community self-host is free forever with unlimited users and hits, which undercuts a paid self-host story.
- The portfolio-pricing wedge is unproven and narrow, and no source shows conversion lift from bundling.
- Undercutting Fathom depends on keeping ingestion near $6/mo VPS cost, and that is arithmetic, not a vendor promise.
What users want
4Stop charging me for sites I do not use.
A Plausible user wrote that their idle site 'just sits there and I'm actually paying money for that just to exists.'
Stop raising the entry price.
One HN commenter called 'upping prices by double-digit % every couple months is just greediness' after Plausible's lowest tier moved $4 to $9/month.
Show my newsletter traffic as Mailchimp, not Direct.
A GitHub discussion reported that all Mailchimp traffic tagged with mc_cid/mc_eid 'shows it as Direct / None'.
Let me self-host without a heavy stack.
A self-hoster built a Golang single binary with zero runtime dependencies so the dashboard runs on a $6 Vultr instance.

What customers complain about

Repeated entry-tier price hikes breed distrust. Plausible's lowest tier moved $4 to $9/month across successive increases, and one HN commenter called it 'upping prices by double-digit % every couple months is just greediness'. | |
Owners pay for idle side-project sites with no pause option. An indie maker runs Plausible across side projects, rarely checks them, and keeps paying: 'So it just sits there and I'm actually paying money for that just to exists.' | |
Newsletter attribution is broken. Mailchimp links tagged only with mc_cid/mc_eid land in Direct/None instead of Mailchimp. The report: "All referred traffic shows it as 'Direct / None'". | |
Self-hosting Plausible is heavy enough to spark a full rewrite. One self-hoster ported the dashboard to a Golang single binary with zero runtime dependencies to run it on a $6 Vultr instance. |

How competitors find customers

|---|---|
| Fathom launched with a public screenshot on Twitter before the product shipped, and hundreds of people offered to pay for the real thing. Open-source downloads later fed the hosted product. | usefathom.com✓ |
| Matomo runs competitor-comparison pages like /plausible-vs-matomo/ with feature tables to catch 'alternative to X' searches. No conversion metric is published. | matomo.org✓ |
Your angle & pricing wedge
| Piece | Claim | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | Privacy analytics that bills a portfolio, not a site: pooled pageviews across unlimited sites, one-click pause for idle sites, newsletter-channel attribution out of the box, and a single-binary self-host path for the same dashboard. | |
| Wedge | Bill pooled pageviews per account with pause, not per-tier pageview ladders that charge for idle sites. Fathom's page shows $15/mo for 100k views with every plan carrying 50 sites, so 10 dormant side projects still consume the tier, and a flat ~$12/mo portfolio plan with pooled counting and pause undercuts that buyer by about 20%, though that 20% is my own math and holds only if ingestion stays near the $6 VPS level. |
How others got traction

| A single dashboard screenshot posted on Twitter before the product shipped. | Fathom's About page says the screenshot 'spread like wildfire' and brought 'hundreds of people offering to pay us for the real thing'. | usefathom.com✓ |
| Open-source and free self-host editions as top-of-funnel. | Fathom states it began 'as an open-source project (which has now been downloaded millions of times)' before the paid hosted product. | usefathom.com✓ |
| Bundle at least 50 sites into every plan. | It wins multi-site owners, who per-site pricing punishes, though no source shows conversion lift from the bundle itself. | usefathom.com✓ |
Market heat
Fathom self-reports thousands of paying customers and billions of pageviews processed. The figures are company-reported, not audited.
Plausible's GitHub repo shows 29.1k stars and 1.9k forks.
A Golang single-binary Plausible-compatible clone drew 283 points and 86 comments on Show HN.

Fathom says it has thousands of paying customers, billions of pageviews processed, and is self-funded and profitable. All self-reported, not independently audited. | usefathom.com✓ |
Matomo says it is used by over 1 million websites worldwide, a company claim not independently verified. A pricing-page testimonial from the MetaLocator CEO claims saving about $150K per year using Matomo. | matomo.org✓ |
Self-serve pricing runs from $15/mo (Fathom, 100k views) to $29/mo (Matomo Cloud entry) up to $470/mo (Fathom, 25M views). No source shows a ~$12/mo portfolio plan winning. | usefathom.com✓ |
Should you build this?
The category monetizes: Fathom self-reports thousands of paying customers and a profitable bootstrapped business, and Matomo claims 1M+ sites. The pain is documented in buyers' words: entry-tier hikes seen as greed, paying for idle side-project sites, Mailchimp traffic misattributed as Direct, and self-hosting heavy enough to motivate a rewrite. The portfolio-pricing plus pause wedge is unproven and narrow, because Fathom already bundles 50 sites per plan and Matomo self-host is free. Before building, recruit 20 indie makers running 3+ sites who already pay for Fathom or Plausible, have each show their bill and name idle sites they pay for, then offer a paid $12/mo pre-order for pooled pageviews with pause. Kill it if fewer than 6 pre-pay or fewer than 10 can point to a real idle-site or misattribution incident.
