Per-Release Creator Memberships
Per-release memberships for audio-drama, serial-fiction and webcomic creators: fans pay only when a new episode or chapter drops, with a monthly cap.
In plain English
- What category is this?
- Companies buy to handle money and rules — payments, accounting, tax, audits. Here the focus is creator monetization.
- The idea, briefly
Per-release billing as the default: a fan picks a per-drop amount and a monthly cap, and is charged only when the creator publishes. The product then delivers a private RSS/feed and gates posts, so no iOS app is needed and Apple's monthly-billing mandate is sidestepped.
More ▾- What buyers expect
People comparing tools like Patreon, SubscribeStar, Ko-fi expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Patreon is forcing every legacy-billing creator onto monthly billing by November 1, 2026 because Apple requires it for the Patreon iOS app; Patreon's own post states legacy billing covered only 4% of creators, and Podnews reports podcasters who release in bursts lose the variable model. Scenario: an audio-drama producer goes months between premieres but must now charge fans every month, with a risk of cancellations; and a cartoonist who ran her whole page on per-creation billing.

Market heat
Apple reimposed a subscription-billing mandate and Patreon says the remaining 4% of creators on legacy billing (per-creation and first-of-the-month) must move to monthly subscription billing by November 1, 2026 or be auto-migrated (company-stated).
More ▾Podnews reports Patreon is removing per-creation memberships and that it was 'particularly useful for some podcasters, especially audio drama producers, who don't make always-on material'.
More ▾AniDB publicly planned a manual workaround of pausing billing up to 11 times a year because Patreon's pause 'can only be done 1 month at a time, cannot be scheduled ahead of time, and must be done manually each month'.

Should you build this?
Who pays: independent audio-drama, serial-fiction, webcomic and cartoon creators who publish in bursts and run on Patreon, plus their fans. What the product does: fans set a per-release price and a monthly cap and are charged only when a new episode or chapter ships, delivered as a private feed. This does not guarantee success: the per-creation cohort is only about 4-5% of Patreon creators, plenty of fans may prefer flat monthly, and Patreon reports some creators earned more after switching. Validation step: before writing billing code, interview 20 creators who publicly used Patreon per-creation billing, offer five a paid pilot at a flat $19/mo with free member migration, and only build if at least three will move a live paying audience and can name the per-release price their fans already pay.
