Pay-Once Own-Your-Notes

A pay-once handwritten note and PDF markup app that keeps your notes as open files, not rented yearly like Notability or Goodnotes.

In plain English

What category is this?
Owners and teams buy to run day-to-day work — scheduling, projects, HR, ops. Here the focus is consumer productivity and education.
The idea, briefly

One-time purchase, no subscription: unlimited handwritten notes and PDF annotation stored as open files you can export anywhere, cross-platform across iPad, Android, Windows and web, with study AI that runs on the user's own API key instead of a $9.99/month add-on. Caveat: both incumbents now sell one-time tiers too (Notability Classic, Goodnotes Special Edition), but Goodnotes' is Apple-only and cloud/AI-limited and Noteful's $6.99 lifetime is the cheap floor, so the wedge must be full cross-platform reach plus no AI meter, not 'pay once' by itself.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Notability (Ginger Labs), Goodnotes, Noteful expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: A subscription switch stripped features customers had already paid for and held their cloud-synced notes hostage; and study AI is a recurring add-on rather than part of the app the student already pays for.

Free tiers are capped small enough to force an upgrade almost immediately.
Years of notes are locked in proprietary formats, so switching apps is painful.
The incumbents' one-time tiers are limited in scope.

  • Goodnotes holds 459K App Store ratings (4.7) and an Apple Editors' Choice badge (platform-reported on its own App Store listing).

Should you build this?

Notability and Goodnotes each hold roughly 457,000-459,000 App Store ratings and Apple's Editors' Choice, Notability says it has over 15 million note takers, and both charge real money ($11.99-79.99 a year, with Goodnotes adding a $9.99-a-month AI Pass). The anger is real: when Notability switched to subscriptions in November 2021 it took back features people had already paid for and, as one customer put it, held their iCloud notes 'hostage until I pay more.' But pay-once is not open ground. Noteful already sells a lifetime unlock for $6.99, Notability itself brought back a one-time Classic tier at $49.99 in mid-2026, and Goodnotes also sells a one-time 'Special Edition' on Apple (sources 4 and 5) - so the price floor is near zero and both incumbents have copied the angle, even if their one-time tiers are Apple-only or cloud/AI-limited. This idea might work only for the specific buyers the cheap and crippled tiers ignore - Android and Windows users and people who want AI without a monthly add-on - and it is not guaranteed.
