Pay-Once Everything-Unlocked Flashcards

Pay once for a flashcard app that imports Quizlet sets and common Anki decks and never locks a study mode.

In plain English

What category is this?
Schools, tutors, and learners buy for courses, training, or study tools.
The idea, briefly

Build one pay-once app (target about $29) that unlocks every core study mode and imports Quizlet sets and common Anki decks with a clean, beginner-friendly interface and offline study, so a student who hit Quizlet's paywall or bounced off Anki keeps everything for less than one year of Quizlet Plus Unlimited. Caveat: a free direct competitor, Words on Repeat, already markets the same unlocked-plus-import pitch (source 13, opened), so the offer must win on interface quality, offline/iOS reliability and support rather than on the unlock itself.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Quizlet, RemNote, Brainscape expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Quizlet moved previously free core study modes behind its paid tier; a long-time user describes the two most useful learning modes being locked; and free Learn mode is reported as capped to a small number of rounds.

Market heat

  • Quizlet had grown past 30 million monthly active users by early 2018 and said about two-thirds of US high-school students and half of college students used it (company-reported in a third-party interview page; opened).

    More ▾
  • Quizlet's revenue is estimated at $139M in 2025 (and an estimated $80M in 2024) by third-party GetLatka; the company does not disclose financials, GetLatka labels the 2024/2023 figures 'Estimated', and GetLatka's own cited source for the 2025 figure is a Yahoo Finance article whose URL concerns 2021 schools-reopening coverage, so the 2025 number is a modeled estimate with a weak underlying source, not a confirmed figure.

    More ▾
  • A study of first-year medical students found 94% used Anki and about 97.6% of Anki users relied on pre-made decks (critic opened the PubMed Central article and confirmed both figures; source verified as opened, not snippet-only).

  • AnkiMobile is the #1 charting Education app on the US App Store at a one-time $24.99, with 2.3K ratings.

Should you build this?

Students do pay to study here -- Quizlet is a large freemium incumbent (30M+ MAU in early 2018, third-party-estimated $139M revenue in 2025) and Anki dominates medical-student review (94% of one surveyed first-year class, 97.6% using pre-made decks) -- and frustration is documented: Quizlet's move of core modes behind Plus is corroborated by an opened competitor page, and non-technical users are documented quitting Anki over its interface in opened sources and in AnkiMobile reviews. But this is not a sure win, and the record has been corrected on several points: the $139M '2025 revenue' is a GetLatka estimate whose own source is a 2021-era Yahoo article; the CEO's Google-ranking claim is founder-attributed, not a documented ranking; RemNote does not advertise Anki/Quizlet/Notion import (only a testimonial mentions it); and the biggest problem is that the closest live substitute, Words on Repeat, already gives away every previously paywalled Quizlet mode plus FSRS and Quizlet/Anki import for free (source 13, opened), so a pay-once offer is competing against free, not merely against Quizlet's subscription. Add Anki's free open-source floor and AnkiMobile's $24.99 one-time as further price anchors. Kill it if fewer than 8 of 50 pre-pay, or if more than half say Anki's free app, RemNote's free tier or Words on Repeat already covers them.
