Own-Your-Library Citation Manager

A citation manager students and researchers buy once: your PDFs stay on your own drive and it works in any browser.

In plain English

What category is this?
Schools, tutors, and learners buy for courses, training, or study tools.
The idea, briefly

Build a local-first citation manager bought once, not rented: unlimited PDFs live on storage the user already controls, signup and use work in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, metadata is resolved by DOI with a verification step, and the Word/Google Docs plugin stays fast past 100 references.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Zotero, Paperpile, BibGuru Plus expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: A vendor can silently remove the ability to export your own files and trap weeks of work. Scenario: a researcher updates the app before a deadline and loses bulk PDF export. Quote from Hacker News comment 18977834: 'After some update, without me noticing it, it was no longer possible to export folders of PDFs or PDFs in general! I had everything in Mendeley, weeks of work.'; and some researchers refuse subscription pricing outright and say they would pay for a standalone product. Scenario: a user who left an acquired tool because it moved to subscriptions. Quote from Hacker News comment 18978365: 'For me subscription pricing is a no-go. It's sad, I would happily pay for a new standalone Papers.'.

Some researchers refuse subscription pricing outright and say they would pay for a standalone product.
Annotation and tag databases built over years become irreplaceable and can be held hostage. Scenario: a researcher with years of highlights stuck in a closed database.
The citation plugin collapses on long documents. Scenario: a thesis or dissertation with more than 100 references, where inserting or refreshing citations stalls the machine.
Automatic PDF metadata capture is unreliable, which is exactly the job users pay a manager to do.
Real personal libraries are far larger than the free sync tiers. Scenario: a researcher who imported decades of papers (~50 GB) must either sync through their own WebDAV or pay ve…

Should you build this?

Who pays: students and researchers who already pay for a reference manager or for cloud storage, and who do not want to rent access to their own PDF library. What job: collect papers, keep the PDFs, cite them in Word or Google Docs, and build a bibliography without the tool holding the library hostage. The hard problem is that Zotero is free, open source, and already lets you sync your PDFs into your own WebDAV, so 'own your storage' is not a new idea, and the incumbents can add a one-time tier the moment it works. This is not guaranteed to work.
