Own-Your-Heart ECG Reader

A one-time-purchase app that explains your Apple Watch or Kardia ECG in plain words and exports a doctor-ready report.

In plain English

What category is this?
Clinics, coaches, and consumers buy for care, fitness, or wellbeing workflows. Here the focus is consumer heart health.
The idea, briefly

Build a one-time-purchase app that reads the Apple Watch ECGs and Kardia PDFs a user already owns, explains the rhythm and intervals in plain language, keeps every reading on the phone with no account, and always exports a clean PDF for a doctor.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Qaly (formerly ReadMyECG), Heart Analyzer (Helix Apps), KardiaCare (AliveCor) expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Kardia locks the useful analysis behind a subscription and nags about findings it will not reveal without payment, and the raw ECG data is not written to HealthKit so other apps cannot read it: 'The Kardia app constantly nags you to subscribe by implying that the app has identified serious conditions, but won't tell you about them until you pay up. Your ECG data is locked inside the Kardia app.'; and aliveCor sells KardiaMobile hardware with a KardiaCare membership and the device requires an active membership.

Kardia locks the useful analysis behind a subscription and nags about findings it will not reveal without payment,
AliveCor sells KardiaMobile hardware with a KardiaCare membership and the device requires an active membership.
Aktiia (now Hilo) charges a recurring fee to keep access to your own blood-pressure data beyond 7 days, on top of the device price.
Qaly's lower-priced plan is AI-first: the Automatic plan routes every ECG through its AI reviewer ('Bobby the Bot') and provides human review only as a fallback when the AI cannot…
Heart Analyzer, praised by reviewers precisely because it had 'no monthly subscription' and a one-time purchase, switched new users to a subscription in July 2026,
Cardiogram's shutdown left existing users without an app for their stored heart history.

Market heat

  • Cardiogram was sold in 2025, its team laid off, and the app removed from the App Store and Google Play (delisted). Snippet-only: the Medium shutdown post returns HTTP 403 and was never opened; the delisting is independently corroborated by the live App Store 404 at citation 12.

    More ▾
  • Cardiogram's own listing self-reported over 10 million users in 100+ countries before delisting (historical figure from the now-dead App Store page, not from the shutdown post).

    More ▾
  • Heart Analyzer, an on-device Apple Watch heart app run by one developer since 2015, switched new users to a subscription in July 2026 after years of one-time purchases.

    More ▾
  • ScreensDesign's similar-app sidebar lists Wellpulse-Heart Health Tracker at about $150k revenue (about 85k installs) and Heartly-Heart Health Recorder at about $95k (<5k installs); these are third-party estimates, not measured revenue.

Should you build this?

People who already own an Apple Watch or a Kardia device are being asked to rent access to their own heart data, and Cardiogram's shutdown left many existing users without an app for their stored history. There is no proof yet that a one-time price beats a subscription at scale, so validate before building anything: stand up a one-page waitlist in r/AppleWatch, r/AFib and r/POTS offering a $29 lifetime unlock that reads Apple Watch and Kardia ECGs, and try to collect 50 paid pre-orders before writing the app. If 50 people pay up front, build it; if they do not, drop it.
