Own-Your-Archive Read-It-Later

A read-it-later app that keeps a permanent, downloadable copy of every article you save, for one low flat yearly price.

In plain English

What category is this?
A software niche that does not fit the usual catalog buckets cleanly. Here the focus is consumer subscription.
The idea, briefly

Build a consumer read-it-later app where the permanent archive, full-text search and one-click export are included in the base price instead of a premium tier: a Pocket-shaped reading queue that stores the full article, keeps a copy the reader can download any time in open formats, and imports a Pocket archive natively without demanding a $60-120/year subscription.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Instapaper, Readwise Reader, Matter expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: A proprietary read-it-later service can delete a decade of saved reading on its own schedule; and the features Pocket refugees most want - a permanent archive and full-text search - are exactly what Instapaper paywalls.

GapSrc
A proprietary read-it-later service can delete a decade of saved reading on its own schedule.
The features Pocket refugees most want - a permanent archive and full-text search - are exactly what Instapaper paywalls.
Raindrop.io likewise gates the features refugees want.
Readers who only want a reading queue feel they are paying for a knowledge-management suite they never use.
The incumbent is explicit that this segment will not get cheaper.
Price-sensitive and non-US readers are priced out of flat US subscriptions.
Migration itself loses the part people care about.

  • Pocket had grown to 20 million registered users who had saved over 2 billion articles and videos, run by a team of just 20 people (First Round, 2015).

  • Raindrop.io saw a three-to-four-times increase in both registrations and subscriptions after Pocket's shutdown announcement, per its founder (founder-reported to PCMag; not independently audited).

Should you build this?

People who save articles to read later pay out of their own pocket, and the job is simple: keep the full text of what you saved so it cannot be deleted when a company changes its mind. Pocket's shutdown stranded millions of them, Raindrop's registrations and subscriptions reportedly jumped three-to-four-times, and Readwise, Instapaper and Matter now charge $33-120 a year while putting the permanent archive and full-text search behind the paywall. The opening is a Pocket-shaped app that includes the permanent archive, search and one-click export in the base price at roughly $15-20 a year or a one-time lifetime fee, undercutting Instapaper ($59.99/yr) and Readwise ($119.88/yr). This is not guaranteed: Wallabag already sells the same archive-plus-search-plus-export bundle at EUR 11 a year - below the proposed price - and open-source and free tiers exist, so price alone is not the wedge; the space is also crowding fast (TechCrunch listed about sixteen alternatives), so the edge must be user experience and trust.
