No-Subscription Offline Trail Maps
A pay-once hiking app that gives casual walkers unlimited offline topo maps and GPX export, with no account, no ads and no subscription.
In plain English
- What category is this?
- A software niche that does not fit the usual catalog buckets cleanly. Here the focus is consumer outdoor navigation.
- The idea, briefly
Build a pay-once (or very cheap flat-fee) hiking app with unlimited offline topo map downloads, unlimited GPX import and export, no account required, no ads, and no social feed, with the free tier keeping offline maps instead of gating them.
More ▾- What buyers expect
People comparing tools like AllTrails, Gaia GPS, Komoot expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Developers of competing open-source hiking apps say the big paid apps put GPX export behind a subscription; the author of one such app writes that 'Most hiking apps (OS Maps, AllTrails, Komoot) lock GPX exporting behind subscriptions.' Scenario: a hiker plans a walk, wants the route as a file on a Garmin or in another app, and hits a paywall on export. I could not confirm a GPX export gate on the incumbents' own App Store listings, so this is an inference from a rival's promotional post, not a verified incumbent policy; and the same developer says 'apps such as AllTrails lock exports and imports behind a paywall, which this app doesn't do. Of course, there is BRouter and OsmAnd but I find these have quite complex UIs.' Scenario: a hiker with existing GPX files cannot move them in or out of AllTrails without paying and finds the free alternatives hard to use. interpreted from a rival developer's post.

Should you build this?
Subscriptions are the norm here, and a one-time price is still an open bet rather than a proven one. The gap is also not empty: Organic Maps already gives away free, ad-free offline OpenStreetMap maps with GPX support and reports about 6 million downloads, so a new paid app has to be friendlier than the free tools and less nagging than the paid ones, and AllTrails and Komoot still own the trail reviews and route content that make discovery sticky. This is not a guaranteed business. Test it before building: recruit 30 people who currently pay for AllTrails Plus/Peak, Gaia GPS Premium or Komoot Premium; ask each to show the last invoice and count how many GPX files they moved in or out in the past year; then take a $29 one-time pre-order for a no-account offline map app. Build only if at least 8 of 30 pre-pay, fewer than half say Organic Maps already covers their offline need, and most move GPX files at least twice a year; otherwise kill it.
