Honest Calorie Log

For dieters who hate subscriptions: a fast calorie and macro log with free barcode scanning, no ads and one flat price.

In plain English

What category is this?
Clinics, coaches, and consumers buy for care, fitness, or wellbeing workflows. Here the focus is consumer health.
The idea, briefly

Build a calorie and macro log where the barcode scanner, the full diary, custom targets and device sync are free rather than subscription-gated, the app runs no ads and does not sell health data, and the only paid option is one low flat upgrade (about $19–29/year or a one-time unlock) instead of a $50–$120 yearly subscription. This is a product-positioning commitment, not a claim that the business will succeed.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, Cal AI expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: The fastest way to log food was moved behind a subscription. A free user who scans packaged groceries every day; and the free tier is ad-choked to the point of being unusable. This app has so much advertising on the free version that it's unusable. Probably half the screen is taken up with ads.' Scenario: a dieter opens the diary to log lunch and must close full-screen ads first, then is asked to consent to sensitive-data collection with no opt-out.

The fastest way to log food was moved behind a subscription. A free user who scans packaged groceries every day.
The free tier is ad-choked to the point of being unusable. This app has so much advertising on the free version that it's unusable.
Buyers want a cheap ad-free tier with the scanner and say the premium price is far above the job they need done. With premium being crazy expensive at $20 a month or $80 a year.
The food database is inaccurate enough to make scanning untrustworthy. about a quarter to half of the things I scan lately are wrong.
Users lose their own history when the paywall moves. All my progress photos and weight history from the last 6 years have been removed.
Billing errors on cancellation. I cancelled my monthly plan and the next month was charged for a full year of premium, the kicker is that my app is still asking me to upgrade.
The AI-photo approach the newer apps sell is openly imprecise. Cal AI's own FAQ states 'CalAI is about 80% accurate', acknowledging the core differentiator is approximate.

Should you build this?

Everyday dieters pay $50–$120 a year for a calorie app, and the category leader is also its most resented: MyFitnessPal users say it moved the barcode scanner behind a paywall, filled the free app with full-screen ads, locked years of their own history behind Premium and kept billing after they cancelled, and many explicitly ask for a cheaper ad-free tier with the scanner for a few dollars a month. Cronometer proves the opposite can work: it gives the scanner away free, displays a 15 million-plus user badge and sells Gold at $59.99 a year. The job is simple: log what you eat fast, see calories and macros, and not feel nickel-and-dimed. The opening is a fast, accurate calorie and macro log whose barcode scanner and diary stay free, with no ads, no health-data selling and one honest flat price. It is not guaranteed to work: Cronometer already owns 'free and accurate', Lose It! and fatsecret have free tiers, MyFitnessPal's advantage is its food data and the years users have stored in it, and roughly 14,700 new subscription apps launch every month, so discovery and database quality matter more than price. Walk away if fewer than 8 pay, if fewer than half can show a paid calorie-app subscription today, or if most say an existing app's free tier already meets their need.
