Flat-Workspace Private Async Video
Async video billed flat per workspace, unlimited creator seats, bring-your-own storage, for SMB teams where few people record.
Founder thesis
Loom proved async video is a real daily habit and that a free tier can scale to 25+ million registered users. Every incumbent still bills per creator, and teams where only a few people record often pay for seats they barely use. I am betting a flat per-workspace price with unlimited seats and bring-your-own-bucket storage wins the privacy-minded SMB teams left to self-serve tools, even though the recording layer is already a commodity.
What others got wrong
Loom bills per Creator and issues no refund or credit when a creator is deactivated, so a team whose CS, support, PM and design staff record only occasionally still pays a seat for each of them
Loom's free Starter plan caps screen recordings at 5 minutes and 25 videos per person, so anyone recording a long walkthrough must split it or upgrade
Privacy-sensitive teams that could not put recordings on a third party's servers had to pick proprietary tools or build their own, because the open source options did not allow quick sharing
Loom, Tella, Zight and Cap all price per user, so no incumbent offers a flat-workspace plan
What should work
Bill the workspace, not the creator: roughly $19-29/mo flat for unlimited creator seats, unlimited recording length and transcription. Loom itself gives free Creator-Lite seats and up to 50 free members on Starter, which shows non-recording seats are a pricing choice, not an infrastructure cost
Ship a one-click Loom import and migration pages to capture switching intent, the move Cap used to pull recording and cloud into a commodity
Offer a BYO S3/R2 bucket or self-hosted deploy for teams that will not store recordings with a third party. Cap already supports both, and Cloudflare R2 lists $0.015/GB-month for standard storage with zero egress fees
Add an MCP/API surface so agents can fetch transcripts and links, and treat it as a differentiator rather than the core product
What kills it
- Cap already ships open-source recording, Loom import, BYO S3 and self-hosting at $12/user/mo, so the feature set is not new
- Tella at $13 and Zight at $9.95 per user already undercut Loom, so per-seat pricing is falling without any flat-workspace plan
- High-resolution or long-video libraries could break the flat margin
- Incumbents can copy flat-workspace billing the moment it shows traction, and demand for it is still unvalidated
What users want
5Record a walkthrough longer than 5 minutes without splitting it or paying
A Show HN poster wrote that Loom was great but kept nagging with updates and that the 5 minute limit was also hard
Keep recordings off a third party's servers
A team on Sorbay's Show HN wrote that a third party provider sent a screen recording full of confidential information and uploaded all of it to a different third party service
Stop paying for cloud storage and capture they do not use, and get link sharing added on top
Two HN commenters on the Sorbay launch said they churned from Loom, one because they do not need the storage part and one because Slack's recorder is good but lacks the killer feature of link sharing
Pay one workspace price instead of a seat for everyone
No buyer complaint turned up for this one, so it is read off Loom's own billing doc, which bills per Creator and forfeits unpaid time when a member is deactivated
Fair pricing and reliability after the Atlassian buy
An Ask HN poster wrote that Loom declined after the Atlassian acquisition, pricing went up and reliability went down, though the post drew only 2 points and 0 comments

What customers complain about
6| Gap | Src |
|---|---|
Loom's free Starter plan caps screen recordings at 5 minutes, so a remote colleague recording a feature walkthrough longer than 5 minutes must split it or pay. | |
Loom bills per Creator, issues no refund or credit when a creator is deactivated, and Atlassian-integrated paid plans dropped free Creator Lite while capped integrated free plans at 10 creators, so staff who record only occasionally still cost seats. | |
Privacy-sensitive teams that could not accept recordings on a third party's servers had to use proprietary tools or build their own, because none of the open source tools allowed quick sharing, and one team wrote a third party sent a confidential recording to yet another service. | |
Churn is driven by not wanting to pay for cloud storage people do not use, and by wanting link sharing on top of free local capture. | |
Per-creator pricing forces teams to buy seats for everyone or restrict who records, read off the Loom and Zight pricing pages, with no logged buyer complaint for this specific point. | |
Post-acquisition sentiment says Loom's pricing rose and reliability fell, but it comes from a 2 point Ask HN post with 0 comments, low signal. |

Your angle & pricing wedge
| Piece | Claim | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | A flat per-workspace async video tool with unlimited creator seats, unlimited recording length and transcription on the entry plan, a one-click Loom import, an optional BYO S3/R2 bucket or self-hosted deploy, and an MCP/API so agents can fetch transcripts and links. This is positioning, not new technology: Cap already ships open-source recording, Loom import, BYO S3 and self-hosting, and Tella and Zight already undercut Loom per seat. | |
| Wedge | Bill the workspace, not the creator: roughly $19-29/mo flat for unlimited creator seats, unlimited recording length and transcription, with a BYO S3/R2 option. That price holds because Loom itself gives free Creator-Lite seats and up to 50 free members on Starter, Cap sells unlimited cloud storage, AI and team workspaces at $12/user while supporting BYO S3 and self-host, and Cloudflare R2 lists $0.015/GB-month for standard storage with zero egress fees, though Cap at $12/user, Tella at $13 and Zight at $9.95 already undercut Loom per seat by roughly 30-50%, so flat billing is the only lever left and is easy to copy. |
How others got traction
3| Move | Why | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Loom ran a free-tier product-led growth motion to scale before the Atlassian deal | The founders credit making video fast, simple and purpose built for work, and the free tier plus branded share pages acted as a viral loop, but no source measures free-to-paid conversion. | atlassian.com✓ |
| Cap open-sourced its recorder and cloud under AGPLv3 and added a Loom importer, BYO S3, self-hosting and comparison pages | An open-source core plus migration SEO turned the recording and cloud layer into a commodity, though Cap publishes no paid-conversion figure. | cap.so✓ |
| Atlassian folded Loom into its suite with recording entry points in Jira and Confluence and Atlassian Guard | The suite bundle is now Loom's growth path, but moving onto Atlassian user tiers removed free Creator Lite on paid plans and capped integrated free plans at 10 creators. | support.atlassian.com✓ |

Self-serve pricing in the category: Loom $18-24/user/mo, Tella $13-19/user/mo, Zight $9.95-12/user/mo, Cap $12/user/mo plus a $29/yr desktop license. Whether a flat ~$19-29/mo workspace plan wins is unproven, since cheaper per-user options already exist. | loom.com✓ |
Should you build this?
Crowded and partly commoditized, so a solo founder should not build this on the flat-workspace idea alone. The category is proven: Loom reported 25+ million registered users and 200k+ paid customers before Atlassian's reported ~$975M acquisition, and cheap per-seat options already exist in Cap at $12/user/mo, Tella at $13 and Zight at $9.95. Real complaints remain: Loom's free tier caps recordings at 5 minutes and 25 videos per person, Loom bills per Creator with no refund on deactivation, and churners say they do not need paid cloud storage. The flat-workspace model is an unvalidated hypothesis incumbents can copy. Run one test first: recruit 25 SMB team leads of 10-60 people who pay for Loom Business, Cap Pro, Tella or Zight, have each list who recorded in the last 90 days against seats paid, ask whether BYO-S3 or self-host is a requirement, and offer a paid pre-order at $29/mo flat, then kill it if fewer than 6 teams pre-pay, if the median paid-seats-to-90-day-recorders ratio is below 1.5x, or if teams say the $10-13/user tools are already cheap enough.
