What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Otter.ai, Notta, TurboScribe expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Otter's free tier cannot cover a normal class load. Its help center states the Basic free plan allows 'Up to 300 minutes per month', a per-recording 'Transcription duration - Up to 30 minutes per transcription', and only 'three audio or video files' for the life of the account, and warns that over the monthly limit 'you will not be able to record or import recordings until your next monthly cycle.'; and minutes expire and cannot be topped up. Otter's help center states plainly that 'Monthly minutes reset each month and do not roll over' and answers the request for more minutes with 'If you require more monthly minutes, we recommend upgrading plans.'.

Should you build this?

Students already pay to record and transcribe class, but today's tools meter them. Otter gives free users 300 minutes a month and cuts any single recording at 30 minutes, charges $8-17 a month for 1,200 minutes, and only removes the meter on a Business plan; Notta's free tier is 120 minutes a month and locks old transcripts to three minutes once you cancel. Real people say it plainly: an AccurateTranscribe Show HN author wrote he was 'frustrated by expensive or limited transcription services', and Otter's own bot-consent scandal (612 points on Hacker News) shows students and workers want a recorder that does not sneak into meetings. The catch is that unlimited transcription is already sold cheap: TurboScribe charges $10 a month for unlimited minutes on the open-source Whisper engine and claims 53.8 million hours transcribed, so a flat 'unlimited minutes' pitch alone is not enough. The opening is a student-priced app that records full-length classes, never caps a session, keeps your notes readable even after you stop paying, and turns each lecture into searchable notes and a study summary. This is a hypothesis, not a promise.
