Flat-Per-Studio Interior Design OS
Seat-free operations software for 2-10 person interior design studios: specs, purchase orders, order tracking, client approvals and invoicing in one flat price.
Founder thesis
The category already collects real money: DesignFiles self-reports 16,173 designers and $1.9B invoiced, and Studio Designer reported 10,000 users and $2B in orders before absorbing Mydoma. Every leader bills per seat, so a five-person studio on Studio Designer Professional pays 5 x $79 = $395 a month before setup. I am betting a flat per-studio price plus invoicing, payment collection and an AI product clipper wins the 3+ seat full-service firms that today pay for two tools.
What others got wrong
Charges the full plan price for every seat and marks account setup mandatory on every tier, so the bill grows straight with headcount.
Leaves money and CRM out of the product: DesignFiles' own FAQ says CRM and accounting are not part of the software.
thesheet sells flat unlimited seats but does not list invoicing, payment processing or accounting reporting on its pages.
Mydoma stacks a one-time $450 onboarding investment on top of $58 per user, so a studio pays before it gets value.
What should work
Bill the studio, not the seat. The marginal cost of another seat in a cloud spec app is near zero, so unlimited seats at a flat price undercuts per-seat rivals on any team of 3 or more.
Put invoice generation and payment collection inside the flat fee so the buyer drops its second financial tool.
Bundle the full money path, FF&E specs, purchase orders, order and delivery tracking, client approvals and invoicing, plus an AI product clipper, in one workspace.
What kills it
- thesheet already sells unlimited seats at EUR 200/mo, so flat pricing alone is not a wedge.
- DesignFiles already bundles specs, purchase orders and invoicing from $75/mo.
- The target segment, teams of 3+ that also need invoicing, may be too small to build a business on.
- Incumbents can add unlimited-seat plans any time.
- The catalog data that makes the incumbent sticky is theirs, not yours.
What users want
5Purchase orders, carrier order tracking and sales reporting in one place.
A small firm weighing Studio Designer, Alcove, Design Manager and DesignSpec wrote on Reddit that ease of creating purchase orders, syncing order tracking with USPS, FedEx and UPS, and reporting sales was the whole point.
Flat, predictable pricing.
A G2 reviewer wrote that Mydoma is clunky and that the pricing is not straightforward.
One tool that runs the accounting, not another subscription.
A Capterra reviewer said you still needed other software to run the business and do the accounting.
Support when accounting goes wrong.
A Capterra reviewer said she spent hundreds of dollars on bookkeeper hours with no resolution and signed off with Buyer be ware.
Access to project files that does not vanish.
A DesignFiles blog notes reviewers say clients lose access to project files if an account is paused.

What customers complain about
7| Gap | Src |
|---|---|
Per-seat billing grows with headcount and setup is mandatory: a 5-person studio on Studio Designer Professional pays 5 x $79 = $395/mo before add-ons. | |
A designer on the Mydoma 2.0 release reports weekly glitches and a bill that is hard to predict; a G2 reviewer calls it clunky with pricing that is not straightforward. | |
DesignFiles sells visuals first: its own FAQ says CRM and accounting are not part of the software, so a designer still pays for QuickBooks and a CRM. | |
A reviewer says Mydoma still left accounting to be done elsewhere. | |
Onboarding fees land before any value: Mydoma charges a one-time $450 and Studio Designer marks account setup mandatory on every tier. | |
Procurement and order tracking are the hardest workflow and the reason firms shop: one firm wanted purchase orders, carrier tracking and sales reporting in one tool. | |
The market leader draws hard support complaints: an owner and her bookkeeper could not get accounting issues resolved, and a reviewer ended with Buyer be ware. |

How competitors find customers

| DesignFiles runs an affiliate program paying 100% of the first month's subscription, up to $69, per referral, a member-to-member first-user loop. | designfiles.refersion.com· |
| DesignFiles runs a private Facebook community of 11K designers plus unlimited free one-on-one training calls, weekly office hours and free templates. | designfiles.co✓ |
| Programa publishes a comparison and guide SEO library to catch shopping queries and claims 6,000+ studios but posts no conversion number. | programa.design· |

Your angle & pricing wedge
| Piece | Claim | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | One flat-priced studio workspace with unlimited seats that bundles the full money path, FF&E specs, purchase orders, order and delivery tracking, client approvals, invoicing and payment collection, plus an AI product clipper, for 2-10 person full-service firms. The combination is not novel: thesheet already sells flat unlimited seats at EUR 200/mo but does not list invoicing or payments, and DesignFiles already bundles specs, POs and invoices from $75/mo but is per-seat and has no CRM or accounting. | |
| Wedge | Bill the studio, not the seat, and fold invoice generation and payment collection into the flat fee so the buyer needs no second financial tool. Every incumbent bills full plan price per seat, so the undercut lands on teams of 3 or more that also want invoicing; whether a flat $59-89/mo studio price is sustainable is unproven. |
How others got traction
3| Move | Why | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Studio Designer moved desktop users to the cloud and invested in onboarding for smaller firms. | It grew from 2,200 users in Dec 2014 to 10,000 users and $2B in orders, and CEO Keith Granet credits easier onboarding and the desktop-to-cloud move. | businessofhome.com✓ |
| DesignFiles sold cheap monthly plans, a free trial and a 90-day money-back guarantee to 16,173 designers. | Low price and low adoption risk pulled designers in, and a private community of 11K plus free training calls kept them. | designfiles.co✓ |
| Mydoma came from a designer solving her own business pain and stayed QuickBooks-friendly. | It won designers who did not want to leave their accountant's workflow, and Studio Designer later acquired it. | mydomastudio.com✓ |
Market heat
DesignFiles reports 16,173 professional designers, 682K projects and $1.9B invoiced.
Studio Designer reported 10,000 users and $2B in orders over 12 months, up from 2,200 users when it was acquired in Dec 2014.
Mydoma's pricing page says 20,000+ designers use its tools, and Studio Designer's page says the two have joined forces.
A flat-seat competitor already exists: thesheet sells an Agency plan at EUR 200/mo with unlimited seats and a Studio plan at EUR 35/mo with 2 seats.

Self-serve pricing runs $55-$119 per user/mo: DesignFiles $55/$75 (+$30/user), Mydoma $58/user (+$450 onboarding), Studio Designer $69/$79/$109 annual or $79/$89/$119 monthly, Programa $71 (+$31/seat), thesheet free / EUR 35 for 2 seats / EUR 200 unlimited. | studiodesigner.com✓ |
Should you build this?
The category collects real budget and the pricing pain is documented, so the problem is real. The wedge is partly taken: thesheet already sells unlimited seats flat at EUR 200/mo, DesignFiles already bundles specs, POs and invoices from $75/mo, and incumbents can add unlimited-seat plans. A flat per-studio price plausibly wins only the 3+ seat full-service firms that want procurement and money in one place. Test it before building: recruit 20 studios with 2-10 seats that already pay for Studio Designer, Mydoma, Programa or DesignFiles, make each show its monthly software bill and name a workflow that forces a second paid tool, then ask for a paid annual pre-order at $69/mo flat with unlimited seats. Kill it if fewer than 6 of 20 prepay, fewer than 8 can show seat pricing or a second tool costs them real money each month, or more than half say DesignFiles or thesheet already covers their need.
