Flat-Firm 1099-DA Reconciliation Desk
One flat firm-wide workspace to reconcile broker 1099-DA proceeds against client cost basis and hand back audit-trail Form 8949s.
In plain English
- What category is this?
- Companies buy to handle money and rules — payments, accounting, tax, audits. Here the focus is fintech.
- The idea, briefly
Build a firm-owned 1099-DA reconciliation desk: treat broker forms (Box 1f/1g and 8949 codes G/H/J/K) as first-class inputs, pair them with wallet/exchange history, run a review queue that flags missing basis, transferred-in lots and safe-harbor elections, and emit a per-client audit-trail Form 8949 worksheet - all under one flat firm subscription rather than per-client transaction pricing.
More ▾- What buyers expect
People comparing tools like Koinly, CoinLedger, ZenLedger expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Kraken's own U.S. Tax Center FAQ (builder-reported opened, source 13; critic could not retrieve the page) states verbatim; and accounting Today (re-opened on independent review) quotes Ledgible VP of product Tomer Siegal.

Market heat
IRS Instructions for Form 1099-DA (2026) require mandatory gross-proceeds reporting for all digital assets, mandatory basis reporting for covered securities, and voluntary basis reporting for noncovered securities; Box 1g is 'Cost or Other Basis', so a blank 1g leaves basis to be reconstructed by the taxpayer or advisor. Confirmed on the opened IRS HTML instructions; the 2026 PDF is also directly fetchable and its text, including the Box 1g section, extracts with pdftotext, so source 1 is reclassified from search-snippet to opened.

Should you build this?
The trigger is real and cited from opened, independently re-verified sources: for tax year 2025 (filed 2026) brokers reported 1099-DA gross proceeds without basis for transferred-in and noncovered assets (Accounting Today, re-opened, source 2; IRS Instructions for Form 1099-DA, opened HTML source 19 and directly fetched/parsed PDF source 1), and DAC8/CARF went live 1 Jan 2026 (European Commission page, re-opened, source 3). Koinly/CoinLedger/ZenLedger/CoinTracking/CoinTracker pricing was independently re-opened and matched (sources 5-9, 18); the SOC 2/ISO certification claim on Koinly could not be reproduced and was removed, and the undercut ceiling was corrected to ZenLedger Plasma $399 (50 clients ~ $19,950). The honest risk is that incumbents already market 1099-DA reconciliation - CoinLedger's homepage banner says 'Received 1099-DA? CoinLedger handles this' - so this may be a feature, not a company. Do not build yet.
