Flat-Fee Stripe-Native Failed-Payment Recovery

Self-serve dunning, retries and backup-card recovery for Stripe-billed SaaS under $5M ARR, priced as one flat monthly fee.

Founder thesis

You are betting that Stripe-billed SaaS under roughly $5M ARR will pay a flat monthly fee for better recovery than free Smart Retries gives them, because the paid vendors start at $250 to $269 a month or take a share of recovered revenue, and the outcome-priced tools begin at $5M annual revenue. The pain is real: Stripe says 25% of lapsed subscriptions are pure payment failures. The problem is that cheap Stripe apps and a free native baseline already sit under your price, so you are betting on workflow quality, not price.

What others got wrong

  • Churnkey and Churn Buster set self-serve entry at $250/mo and $269/mo, which pushes a small merchant's failed-payment bill to roughly 12-27% of the money at stake before any recovery is counted.

  • Butter Payments shows no public rate card and routes every visitor to Let's Talk and Book a consult, so a buyer cannot price it without a sales call.

  • FlyCode charges only on revenue recovered above a baseline and its calculator starts at $5M annual revenue, so a $500k to $2M ARR SaaS cannot even estimate a price.

  • Existing recovery tools stopped at email recovery or dumped data without saying what to do next, according to ChurnDog's founder on Show HN.

What should work

  • Publish a public flat price. A commenter on FlyCode's launch wrote that seeing pricing should not require a long survey and an email address.

  • Point the tool at the merchants the outcome-priced vendors filter out, since FlyCode's $5M annual-revenue floor leaves the smallest Stripe-billed SaaS unserved.

  • Launch through the Stripe App Marketplace and a Launch HN post. FlyCode's Launch HN drew 103 points and 66 comments, and its founders say they were featured in Stripe's marketplace.

  • Give away churn analytics as top of funnel, the way Churnkey offers Retention Metrics completely free before it upsells recovery.

What kills it

  • Stripe Smart Retries is bundled free and keeps improving, and Stripe says it recovers $9 per $1 spent on Billing, which caps low-end pricing.
  • RecoverPay already gives away a free-forever plan to 25 customers and charges EUR 29/mo, at or below the proposed flat fee.
  • The recovery edge comes from ML trained on network-level data and card-network compliance, which FlyCode and Butter have and a solo entrant cannot match at small scale.
  • The retry, dunning and backup-card logic is copyable in weeks, so any lead is short-lived.

What users want

4
  • A dunning tool priced and sized for a small SaaS, not an enterprise.

A developer running a side-project on Stripe wrote on Show HN in January 2026 that he looked at Churn Buster and Dunning but they're overkill and expensive for small SaaS.

  • Pricing you can see without filling out a form.

A commenter on FlyCode's launch wrote that seeing pricing should not require filling out a long survey and an e-mail address.

  • Recovery that runs without manual ops.

A founder who ran a roughly 100K-user SaaS said he never automated any of this, just asked customers to try another card or, in extreme cases, took a bare PayPal transfer and provisioned the payment by hand.

  • A tool that says what to do next, not just more charts.

ChurnDog's founder said existing churn tools stopped at email recovery or dumped a bunch of data without telling me what to do next.

Small SaaS builders call the paid dunning incumbents overkill and expensive. A developer running a side-project on Stripe wrote on Show HN in January 2026 that he looked at Churn Buster and Dunning but they're overkill and expensive for small SaaS.
The ML-recovery vendors' pricing excludes the smallest merchants by design. FlyCode's calculator starts at $5M annual revenue, Churnkey's Starter tier is scoped to teams under $5k/month churn at $250/mo, and a merchant with $1,000 to $2,000/month in failed payments hands 12-27% of that failed revenue to Churnkey Starter or Churn Buster's $269/mo before any recovery.
Operators with real scale still solve this by hand. A founder who ran a roughly 100K-user SaaS said on Launch HN in October 2024 that he never automated any of this, just asked customers to try another card or took a bare PayPal transfer and provisioned the payment manually.
Pricing opacity is itself a friction complaint. A commenter on FlyCode's launch wrote that seeing pricing should not require a long survey and an email address, and added that it seems like a feature the payment providers would already offer.
Vendor-attributed and not independently verified: native Stripe retries are said to hit an attempt cap. FlyCode's founder said on Launch HN that Stripe caps retries at 8 attempts and that many payments are left on the table. Stripe and independent sources do not confirm the cap.
The degree of Paddle Retain lock-in is unresolved. The Retain page markets it as Paddle Billing's built-in toolkit at no extra cost, but the same page says it plugs into an existing billing system and works with your existing billing stack with no need to change payment providers, so the claim that a Stripe-native SaaS must change its merchant-of-record is not supported by the page.

FlyCode built and listed apps in the Stripe App Marketplace and the Shopify App Store, then launched on Hacker News. The Launch HN post drew 103 points and 66 comments, and the founders say they were featured in Stripe's marketplace.news.ycombinator.com✓
FlyCode ran the same marketplace plus Show HN play a year later with a narrower story about backup-card recovery, drawing 22 points and 38 comments, so it looks like a repeatable narrow-launch pattern rather than a one-off.news.ycombinator.com✓
Churnkey uses a free churn-analytics tool as top of funnel: connect a billing provider, get voluntary versus involuntary churn and cohort and cake charts at no cost, then upsell cancellation flows and payment recovery. Its own Show HN drew 1 point and 0 comments, so Hacker News itself did not drive it.churnkey.co✓

AngleA single flat-fee, self-serve Stripe app that runs layered recovery (retry timing, backup-card fallback, dunning emails, a recovery dashboard) with public pricing and unlimited subscribers, aimed at Stripe-billed SaaS under roughly $5M ARR that outcome-priced and $250+/mo vendors filter out. The combination is not unique: Rekko, ChurnDog and RecoverPay already ship cheap Stripe-native recovery, RecoverPay from EUR 0/29/mo, and Stripe's native Smart Retries is free, so the defensible piece would have to be recovery rate or workflow quality, which is unproven for a small entrant.
WedgeBill one flat monthly fee for unlimited subscribers and seats, say $29 to $49/mo, instead of the observed floors of $250/mo (Churnkey Starter, scoped to under $5k/month churn volume) and $269/mo (Churn Buster), and instead of a revenue share (Butter, FlyCode). The arithmetic: a merchant with $1,500/month in failed payments pays about 17-18% of that failed revenue at $269/mo versus about 2-3% at $39/mo. Marginal cost is plausibly near-zero, just Stripe API calls and transactional email, consistent with Stripe running Smart Retries inside Billing, but that cost structure is not audited. Whether buyers switch is unvalidated, and Rekko, ChurnDog and RecoverPay already occupy or undercut this price, with RecoverPay free to 25 customers and EUR 29/mo above that.

Stripe built Smart Retries into Billing and sold the recovered revenue as the outcome, not the tooling, with ML models trained on 500+ attributes across the Stripe network.Stripe's own blog credits an Auto-ML ensemble and richer network data, and a free native feature that keeps improving leaves the independent market only where native retries are capped or poorly measured.stripe.com✓

Self-serve pricing for paid recovery starts at roughly $250 to $269/mo (Churnkey Starter, Churn Buster), with revenue-share or outcome-based models above that (Butter, FlyCode), and already reaches EUR 0/29/mo at the low end (RecoverPay). That a $29-49/mo flat entrant can profitably serve the sub-$5M ARR segment is not validated, and RecoverPay already prices below the proposed point.

Should you build this?

The category monetizes hard and the pain is real, but the low end is already contested and the durable edge sits with Stripe and the funded vendors. Real complaints exist: a small-SaaS builder calls the leaders overkill and expensive, a 100K-user SaaS founder took bare PayPal transfers by hand, and one buyer says pricing should not require a form. The problems stack up. Rekko, ChurnDog and RecoverPay already sell cheap Stripe-native recovery and RecoverPay prices at or below the proposed $29-49/mo, free Smart Retries keeps improving, and the recovery-rate edge comes from ML trained on network-level data and card-network compliance that a solo entrant cannot match. Run one test first: recruit 25 Stripe-billed founders with $500 to $5,000/month in failed payments, have each pull their Stripe recovery dashboard and last 90 days of failed invoices, and compute what share native Stripe recovery already captures and whether a flat $39/mo tool recovering 5 extra points nets positive against the last 90 days. Ask for a paid pre-order at $39/mo, and kill it if fewer than 6 of 25 pre-pay, if native recovery already captures more than 70% of failed revenue for most, or if those founders already know or run Rekko, ChurnDog or RecoverPay.
