Flat-Fee Creator Storefront

Flat-fee storefront for creators to sell digital products, memberships, and tips, with tax handled, aimed at those leaving 10% platform cuts.

Founder thesis

Creators who pay 10% or more on recurring revenue will move to a flat fee if the number is concrete and tax is handled. Ko-fi already proves a $12/mo 0% tier can hold against Patreon, and Gumroad's December 2022 move to 10% pushed sellers to look for alternatives. Now is the moment to test whether a flat price can also cover merchant-of-record tax cost.

What others got wrong

  • Gumroad moved to a flat 10% in December 2022 but left processing on top, so sellers saw 13% or more and treated the headline rate as bait.

  • Patreon tried to push fees onto patrons in December 2017, a $1 pledge would have cost $1.38, and creators lost pledges until the CEO reversed it and apologized.

  • Incumbents lost sellers whose only reason to stay was payment access, one seller moved the catalog to a new processor the moment Stripe arrived in their country.

What should work

  • Charge a flat $19-29/mo at 0% platform fee so the saving is the pitch: a creator grossing $2,000/mo pays about $200 on Gumroad direct against about $29 flat.

  • Bundle merchant-of-record tax handling, which Gumroad and Patreon already carry and Ko-fi sidesteps by making the creator the merchant.

  • Ship one-click importers from Gumroad and Patreon, which is credible because Ko-fi lets creators pay into their own Stripe/PayPal and download supporter emails.

  • Buy intent with a Patreon alternative comparison page carrying a fee table and switcher testimonials, the tactic Ko-fi already runs.

What kills it

  • Flat pricing may not cover merchant-of-record compliance cost across many tax jurisdictions, and that is unproven.
  • Ko-fi already sells $12/mo at 0% and owns the Patreon alternative search page, so the wedge is partly taken.
  • Fee changes are the highest-churn-risk lever in this category, so any future price change could repeat Patreon's 2017 collapse.
  • Sellers tolerate cuts when they lack payment access, and they leave the moment local Stripe arrives.

What users want

5
  • Recurring subscription revenue that is not the most punished revenue type.

A Gumroad seller of ebooks and subscriptions called the 10% flat fee a 3x increase that will really hurt our business and push SaaS subscriptions off the platform.

  • A fee they can estimate and pay up front.

An ebook author who sold 2,050 copies in early access wrote that they switched from Gumroad to Lemon Squeezy over the flat 10% fee.

  • To see the real take, processing included.

A seller on Hacker News pointed out that Gumroad's 10% is actually a 13%+ fee once Stripe's 2.9% and 50c are added.

  • To move once they have their own payment processor.

A Gumroad seller wrote that Gumroad was dishonest on many levels and moved their catalog to a new processor once Stripe became available in their country.

  • Small-dollar support that does not get eaten by fee framing.

Patreon's 2017 plan would have made a $1 pledge cost $1.38 and a $5 pledge cost $5.50, and creators lost pledges until it was reversed.

Gumroad's 10% flat fee is a 3x increase for a seller of ebooks and subscriptions and pushes recurring revenue off the platform.
An ebook author with 2,050 early-access sales moved from Gumroad to Lemon Squeezy rather than pay the new cut.
Gumroad's advertised 10% hides processing, so the real take is 13% or more.
Sellers stayed on Gumroad only while their country lacked Stripe, then left when it arrived.
Patreon's 2017 fee shift would have made a $1 pledge cost $1.38, and small pledges leave first.

Your angle & pricing wedge

Angle and pricing wedge

AngleA flat $19-29/mo storefront with 0% platform fee, merchant-of-record VAT handling, and one-click Gumroad and Patreon membership importers, aimed at creators leaving fee backlash. It differs from the pending BYO-payments flat-rate storefront, which is BYO-Stripe with the creator as merchant and no merchant of record, so this one tests whether a flat fee can cover merchant-of-record cost.
WedgeBill a flat subscription instead of a percentage cut. A creator selling $2,000/mo pays about $200 plus $0.50 per sale on Gumroad direct, or 10% plus processing on Patreon, against about $29 flat, a saving near 85% before processing, which still passes through at Stripe cost. Ko-fi's $12/mo 0% tier shows the position is real, but whether flat covers merchant-of-record compliance at scale is unproven, since Ko-fi avoids that cost by making the creator the merchant.

Market heat

  • Patreon signed up more than 125,000 patrons in its first 18 months after launching in May 2013.

  • Patreon announced patrons were sending over $1,000,000 per month to creators by late 2014.

  • Gumroad's December 2022 move to a 10% flat fee drew a 58-point Hacker News thread full of sellers discussing migration.

  • Ko-fi's own comparison page claims 1M creators use it, a company claim not independently verified.

Category pricing runs from Gumroad 10% + $0.50 direct and 30% on Discover, to Patreon 10% + processing, to Ko-fi $12/mo Gold at 0%, so whether a $19-29/mo flat merchant-of-record entrant fits between Ko-fi's no-MoR flat model and Gumroad's percentage model is unproven.

Should you build this?

This idea is not guaranteed. The category monetizes at scale and the fee pain shows up in seller complaints, but Ko-fi already sells $12/mo at 0%, owns the Patreon alternative page, and avoids merchant-of-record cost by making the creator the merchant, so a flat MoR entrant must survive compliance costs Ko-fi sidesteps. Recruit 20 creators paying percentage cuts who gross $1,000+/mo, have each compute last quarter's real platform-plus-processing take, and offer 10 annual seats at $29/mo as a paid pre-order. Kill it if fewer than 6 pre-pay, fewer than 10 show effective takes above 12%, or EU sellers say they would keep Gumroad purely for VAT handling.
