Health & wellness
SafeAisle
For families managing food allergies: one flat-rate app that scans groceries and checks restaurants for every family member's allergens, with no subscription trap.
In plain English
- What category is this?
- Clinics, coaches, and consumers buy for care, fitness, or wellbeing workflows. Here the focus is consumer health & wellness.
- The idea, briefly
Every profile, everywhere, at once: one flat price covers unlimited barcode scans and unlimited family members on both iOS and Android, including checking a single restaurant menu against multiple allergen profiles simultaneously - the exact combination Fig gates behind Fig+ and Spokin lacks on Android. Caveat: Fig's opened support page says multi-profile restaurant selection is in development 'in the near future', so the durability of this wedge is unproven.
More ▾- What buyers expect
People comparing tools like Spoonful, Fig, Spokin expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Household profiles are paywalled, not standard: even though Fig's store listing markets 'Make a profile for everyone you care about', Fig's own support page concedes 'The Multiple Figs feature is available on Fig+.' Trigger: a parent with two children on different allergen sets cannot create the second child's profile without buying Fig+. (documented on the opened support page.); and restaurant screening is single-profile: Fig's support page states 'Does Multiple Figs work for restaurants? Yes, but only for one Fig profile at a time.' Trigger: a family with two allergic children cannot screen one restaurant menu against both children's allergens at once. (documented; the page adds it is 'working to enable having multiple profiles selected at once for restaurants in the near future'.).

Market heat
FARE's facts page states approximately 33 million people in the U.S. have at least one food allergy, and caring for children with food allergies cost U.S. families nearly $25 billion annually in a 2011-2012 analysis ($33 billion in 2024 dollars).
More ▾Fig's App Store and Google Play descriptions both claim '1M+ satisfied members', and its App Store listing holds 4.7 stars across 16K ratings.
Spoonful's homepage shows '500K+ Active Users', '1M+ Products Checked' and a 4.6 App Store rating (company-published, self-reported).
FARE notes most fatal food-allergy reactions are triggered by food consumed outside the home, and that reactions were frequently attributed to ice-cream shops (14%), bakeries/doughnut shops (13%) and Asian restaurants (19%), which is the moment this product is used.

Should you build this?
Parents managing food allergies already pay roughly $30-$70/year for scanner apps, and the family feature they need exists only partially: Fig's own support page says Multiple Figs is Fig+ only and that restaurant screening works for only one profile at a time (citation 4), and Spokin has no Android app and no estimated date (citation 9). Those two opened, vendor-authored limitations are the strongest verified basis for a family-first, single-flat-price scanner; the FARE figures (citation 12) confirm a large, motivated U.S. population but not willingness to pay, which remains unproven. The pitch does NOT rest on the unsupported gap and revenue claims: the Google Play trial complaint (citation 6), the Spokin 'other side of the country' review (citation 8), the r/FODMAPS accuracy thread (citation 7) and the AppBrain manual-search review (citation 13) could not be confirmed on the cited pages and are downgraded to interpreted, and the Sensor Tower revenue estimate (citation 14) rendered no figures.
