Coupon-First, Flat-Rate Affiliate Attribution
Affiliate and referral tracking for SaaS and mobile app makers. Coupon codes and server-side postbacks credit sales without cookies, at a flat monthly price.
Founder thesis
I am betting buyers care more about every sale getting credited than about any single feature, and that no-cookie attribution plus a flat price wins a segment the incumbents price out. Agent access, managed payouts and coupon tracking are now commodity, so tracking that survives ad-blockers is a purchasing question, not a build problem. The real bet is mobile in-app purchases, where App Store Connect and Google Play Billing attribution has no self-serve vendor among the five programs I priced.
What others got wrong
They tie price to affiliate-attributed revenue. Rewardful steps at $7,500, $15,000 and $30,000 a month, FirstPromoter at $5,000 and $15,000, Tolt at $10,000, $20,000 and $50,000, so a merchant at $30,000 pays several times what a merchant at $1,000 pays on the same event stream.
FirstPromoter advertises 'Flat pricing. No revenue cut' while its plan tiers are set by monthly affiliate-attributed revenue.
The obvious fix for blocked tracking is already on the shelf. Affonso sells coupon tracking and 'Bypass ad blockers' on every plan from $15/mo.
Reflio and RefearnApp are open-source, self-hostable affiliate trackers already posted to Hacker News, so nobody holds a technical edge in linking clicks to charges.
What should work
Bill one flat price per account for unlimited affiliate-attributed revenue, with no tier that rises as the number grows, because every competitor I priced steps up as it grows.
Take mobile in-app purchase merchants first, since App Store Connect, StoreKit and Google Play Billing appear in none of the five integration lists I read.
Run migration marketing from day one: competitor alternative pages plus case studies with hard customer numbers, the pattern Tolt uses to pull high-intent switching traffic.
Make coupon plus postback the default tracking path, not an option. Rewardful's co-founder notes coupon-only tracking loses clicks and can attract coupon sites, so the postback half is what keeps affiliate trust.
What kills it
- Affonso already sells the two features that make this different, coupon tracking and ad-blocker bypass, at $15/mo.
- Mobile in-app purchase merchants may build their own tracking rather than pay for hosted simplicity, and nobody has shown they will pay.
- Price alone is a feature a competitor can copy in a week, and open-source self-hosted trackers already undercut the category.
- The incumbents own the logos, reviews and partner-side accounts, and migration friction keeps them there.
What users want
5Sales they refer should count even when the buyer's browser blocks cookies.
A Hacker News commenter wrote that after cookie blocking most conversions never showed up, affiliates stopped getting credited, and then stopped promoting.
Tracking that records what actually converts, not one sale in ten.
A commenter who was an affiliate on CJ and Rewardful wrote that both clicks and conversions went untracked, maybe one in ten clicks.
A price that does not bill $50-100 a month whether affiliates sell or not.
A Hacker News poster wrote that tools like Rewardful charge $50-100 a month whether affiliates make sales or not.
One subscription that covers several products instead of one program per product.
A founder who built a Rewardful alternative wrote that launching more products meant paying more just to run more affiliate programs.
Attribution that works with regional payment gateways, not just Stripe.
A business owner wrote they moved from Rewardful to Tapfiliate because Stripe-only tracking made it hard to onboard anyone outside the US.

What customers complain about
7| Gap | Src |
|---|---|
Affiliates get clicks and conversions that are never credited because the tracking cookie is blocked, so they stop promoting. A Hacker News commenter wrote exactly that about Rewardful. | |
Third-party systems under-record conversions, in this case as an affiliate on CJ and Rewardful, at maybe one in ten clicks. Rewardful's co-founder counters that ad-blockers block every provider's scripts and that coupon-only tracking loses click data. | |
The flat subscription bills whether or not affiliates make a sale, and an early program can pay the tool more than the channel earns. Two founders wrote this about $50-100/mo tools. | |
Running several products multiplies the cost, because each product needs its own program and account. | |
Attribution runs through the payment processor, so merchants on other or regional gateways cannot onboard. That complaint is dated 2022, and Rewardful now advertises Stripe and Paddle, but regional gateways stay thin. | |
Mobile in-app purchases look like a thin segment. One 2024 Hacker News commenter saw no affiliate tool aimed at iOS developers and said App Store Connect and StoreKit APIs would be needed. Five vendor integration lists stop at Stripe, Paddle, Chargebee, Recurly, Braintree, and Affonso adds Polar, Creem and Dodo, and none lists App Store Connect or Play Billing. One comment and five vendor pages are thin evidence, not proof the segment is empty. | |
Manual payouts, tax forms and partner support eat real hours and drive migrations. Tolt's own case study describes a rival's old process: CSV exports, moving between payment platforms, batch payments, two people for one to three working days a month. |

How competitors find customers
5| Tactic | Src |
|---|---|
| Migration case studies plus competitor alternative pages. Tolt runs 'Rewardful Alternative', 'FirstPromoter Alternative', 'Tapfiliate Alternative', 'LeadDyno Alternative' and 'PartnerStack Alternative' pages, and publishes a migration story with the customer's revenue number as the hook. | tolt.io✓ |
| A comparison-content library plus a free AI skill as top-of-funnel. Rewardful runs a hub of 10+ head-to-head articles and gives away a 'Rewardful Skill for Claude' built on '10 years of expertise and real program data'. | rewardful.com✓ |
| Outcome case studies with hard numbers. FirstPromoter fronts a customer story quoting over $1M in total revenue from affiliates, 1,400 paying customers and 5K+ promoters. | firstpromoter.com✓ |
| Product Hunt and indie-founder word of mouth. Affonso's testimonial wall is Product Hunt reviews and X posts from named founders (Uneed, supastarter, Postel, Velox Themes, MakerKit) and it self-reports 'Trusted by 500+ Brands'. | affonso.io✓ |
| A Product Hunt launch badge as evergreen social proof. Tolt embeds its daily top-post badge on its pricing and blog pages. | tolt.io✓ |
Your angle & pricing wedge
| Piece | Claim | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Angle | Coupon codes plus server-side postbacks as the default attribution path, so conversions are credited without client-side cookies, priced flat per account with no escalator tied to affiliate-attributed revenue, with a first beachhead in mobile in-app purchases (App Store Connect, StoreKit, Google Play Billing) and regional gateways processor-based tools miss. Everything else in the pitch already ships: coupon tracking and ad-blocker bypass from Affonso, managed payouts from Tolt and FirstPromoter, MCP surfaces across four vendors, so the only open ground is the mobile-IAP segment and the pricing shape. | |
| Wedge | Two moves: drop the revenue escalator and bill one flat per-account price for unlimited attributed revenue, since Rewardful steps at $7,500/$15,000/$30,000, FirstPromoter at $5,000/$15,000, Tolt at $10,000/$20,000/$50,000 and Affonso at $1,000/$10,000/$30,000, and take the mobile in-app purchase segment, which no pricing page among the five vendors I read covers with App Store Connect, StoreKit or Google Play Billing. Two catches: the price move is not novel because Affonso sits at $15-$79 with a one-time-revenue-pass deal its own customers expect to be copied, and open-source self-hostable trackers exist, while mobile-IAP merchants may build their own tracking rather than pay for hosted simplicity. |
How others got traction
4| Move | Why | Src |
|---|---|---|
| Rewardful launched in 2017 on being cheaper and simpler than existing affiliate software. | Founders Kyle Fox and Brady Cassidy named the dilemma as price and complexity, and that positioning built a base of 3,000+ teams, 200,000+ affiliates and 13 employees. | rewardful.com✓ |
| Tolt published a migration case study with the customer's revenue jump as the hook. | It sold operations, not tracking: HeyReach moved off Rewardful in January 2025, went from about $200,000 to over $3.1M in partner-driven revenue, and stopped spending one to three person-days a month on payouts. | tolt.io✓ |
| Affonso undercut everyone at $15/mo with coupon tracking, ad-blocker bypass, an affiliate discovery agent and a marketplace. | Its founder testimonials credit 'overpriced and overly complex' alternatives, and indie founders it met through Product Hunt and X filled the testimonial wall. | affonso.io✓ |
| FirstPromoter fronted a customer outcome story with hard numbers. | CustomGPT reported over $1M in cumulative affiliate revenue, 1,400 paying customers and 5,000+ promoters since 2023, which answers whether the channel is worth standing up at all. | firstpromoter.com✓ |
Market heat
Rewardful self-reports 3,000+ SaaS and AI teams, 200,000+ affiliates, 13 employees in 9 countries and 110+ countries served.
FirstPromoter self-reports 3,000+ SaaS businesses, plus '2,980+ Subscription businesses' and '$30M+ Revenue tracked monthly'.
Tolt's migration case study reports one customer, HeyReach, growing partner-driven revenue from about $200,000 to over $3.1M with 1,500+ referred paying customers.
More ▾Affonso self-reports 'Trusted by 500+ Brands' at a $15/mo entry price.
The category has several profitable-looking self-serve vendors from $15 to $199/mo: Rewardful, FirstPromoter, Tolt, Tapfiliate and Affonso, all confirmed on their own pricing pages.

Revenue signals

Rewardful: self-reported 3,000+ SaaS and AI teams, 200,000+ affiliates, 13 employees in 9 countries, 110+ countries served, part of saas.group. A Hacker News hiring comment calls it a 'Profitable company, small but growing team of senior developers'. No MRR or ARR is published. | rewardful.com✓ |
FirstPromoter: self-reported 3,000+ SaaS businesses, '$30M+ Revenue tracked monthly' and '2,980+ Subscription businesses'. No MRR or ARR is published. | firstpromoter.com✓ |
Tolt: no company revenue is published; its case study reports customer metrics (HeyReach partner program over $3.1M, customer at more than $17M ARR). Company-reported and unaudited. | tolt.io✓ |
Affonso: self-reported '500+ Brands' and 'hundreds of successful founders', entry price $15/mo; no revenue figure published. | affonso.io✓ |
Category self-serve pricing spans $15/mo (Affonso Launch) to $199/mo (Tolt Pro), tiered on affiliate-attributed revenue except Tapfiliate, which caps affiliates, clicks and conversions; enterprise starts around $149/mo. Arithmetic from pricing tables, not a vendor promise. | affonso.io✓ |
A flat $19-39/mo product could plausibly reach $10K-$20K MRR at roughly 400-800 paying accounts, but no competitor publishes paid-conversion or churn, so this is a hypothesis, not a projection. Willingness to pay in the mobile-IAP segment is unproven. |
Should you build this?
The category monetizes and is being re-priced, but this wedge is crowded and half-executed. Rewardful self-reports 3,000+ teams, 200,000+ affiliates and 13 employees, FirstPromoter self-reports 3,000+ SaaS businesses at $30M+ tracked monthly, Affonso self-reports 500+ brands at $15/mo, and Tolt shows one customer at $3.1M+ in partner revenue. The complaints are real and specific: cookie blocking leaves affiliates uncredited until they quit, conversions get logged at maybe one in ten clicks, $50-100/mo bills arrive whether the program sells or not, and payouts eat one to three person-days a month. The fixes are not novel, since Affonso ships coupon tracking and ad-blocker bypass from $15/mo, four competitors ship managed payouts, and open-source trackers exist; the only structurally thin ground is mobile in-app purchase attribution, and that rests on five vendor pages and one 2024 question. Run one test first: recruit 25 indie SaaS and mobile-app merchants who run or abandoned an affiliate program, make each show their current tool's last three invoices and one real uncredited-conversion incident, and offer a paid pre-order at a flat $29/mo plus a separate mobile-IAP pilot. Kill it if fewer than 6 of 25 can show a real incident, fewer than 4 pre-pay, or fewer than 3 mobile teams commit; if only the price objection recurs, the wedge is a feature Affonso can match, not a business.
