Condition-Based Flat-Rate Social Listening

A brand monitor for small agencies and multi-product teams. It alerts only when you set a condition, and charges one flat price per workspace.

Founder thesis

Big monitoring tools meter mentions, cap history and lock seats, so small agencies and multi-product teams pay for brands they cannot fully cover. I am betting that a flat price per workspace with condition-based alerts, coverage-health reporting and a no-truncation guarantee wins teams stuck between $29 tools and $299 tiers. The category clearly makes money, so the question is whether this packaging wins, not whether anyone pays.

What others got wrong

  • Incumbents meter mentions and treat the cap as a sales trigger. Brand24's own FAQ says it will contact you to talk about a potential upgrade when you collect more mentions than your plan permits.

  • Cheap tiers silently overwrite history. Awario's own FAQ says once the history limit is reached it replaces the oldest mentions with newly found ones, so a mention you did not act on can vanish.

  • Export sits behind high tiers. Awario gates CSV export to Pro and Enterprise, so a two-person team cannot export its own mentions on the Starter tier.

  • The mid-market self-serve path is closing. Mention no longer publishes a self-serve price, showing a quote-only Company plan, and deprecated its Publish and Respond features in favour of Agorapulse.

What should work

  • Bill the workspace, not the mention. Awario prices 1,000,000 mentions at $249/mo, about $0.00025 each, which shows mention caps are packaging rather than a cost floor.

  • Sell condition-based alerts, not keyword streams. A monitor fires on a buying-intent phrase, a sentiment drop below a threshold, an unanswered complaint older than N hours, or a volume spike against a baseline, which answers the noise and miss complaints directly.

  • Charge one flat price per workspace, target $49 to $79/mo, for unlimited mentions, seats and client brands, since unlimited users only start at Brand24's $299/mo Team tier and Awario's $249/mo Enterprise tier and Syften has no per-client workspaces at all.

  • Answer high-intent threads and publish alternative pages, the two acquisition moves with any documented numbers. One HN comment produced about 70 sign-ups, and both Brand24 and Syften run alternative pages, though neither publishes a conversion number.

What kills it

  • The low end is already full. Syften sells AI filtering, API, webhooks and MCP from $29.95/mo and Awario starts at $29/mo, so flat pricing is not new.
  • Flat pricing is not a wedge on its own. Two cheap incumbents already sit below a $49 to $79 target.
  • Ingestion, anti-bot and LLM costs are real and unaudited, so an unlimited flat price may not hold.
  • Incumbents can re-price or undercut, and a free self-hosted monitor already shipped on Hacker News in 2026.

What users want

3
  • Catch real buyer-intent posts, not noise.

One Hacker News poster wrote that most tools they tested 'grab way too much irrelevant noise, miss actual buyer-intent posts, or break when platforms change UI/API,' in a 3-point thread where the poster was promoting OptaReach.

  • Pay once, not per mention or per seat.

A competitor's founder wrote on Hacker News that 'most of the paid services start at $49 or $99' and meter total mentions, though he was selling a cheaper alternative and wrote it in 2020.

  • A cheap or free monitor that still works.

A practitioner in the Indie Hackers thread runs the free tool F5Bot as their monitor.

Tools are both too noisy and too lossy for intent work. One Hacker News poster wrote that most tools they tested 'grab way too much irrelevant noise, miss actual buyer-intent posts, or break when platforms change UI/API.' The thread had 3 points and 3 comments and the poster was promoting OptaReach, so treat it as directional and vendor-adjacent, not a benchmark.
History is truncated on cheap tiers, so a mention you did not act on can disappear. Awario's own FAQ says once the history limit is reached it replaces the oldest mentions with newly found ones. A team watching a competitor for a quarter would find earlier spikes gone.
Mentions are capped by plan and the only relief is a sales call or an upgrade. Brand24's pricing FAQ says it will contact you to talk about a potential upgrade if you collect more mentions than your plan permits. A launch or viral week can stall monitoring until a plan change is negotiated.
Coverage can differ wildly between vendors on the same keywords. Awario's own competing-vendor comparison reports 62,810 mentions on Brand24 versus 1,705 on Awario at the start, then 150,000 versus 69,001 after a day. It is a self-interested vendor claim and it cuts against Awario's own product.
A competitor's founder says most paid tools meter total mentions and start at $49 to $99 for a few keywords. He wrote this on Hacker News in 2020 while selling a cheaper alternative, but it matches the 2026 pricing pages.
Useful data sits behind higher tiers. Awario gates CSV export to Pro and Enterprise, and a competing-vendor comparison says Brand24 keeps history up to 12 months, reserves real-time search for Max users and export for Premium, and limits Awario white-labelling to Enterprise. That comparison is self-interested, uses Brand24 plan names that no longer appear on its 2026 page, and its Awario white-label claim contradicts Awario's own page, which lists white-label reports on all tiers.
The mid-market self-serve path is narrowing. Mention no longer publishes a self-serve price, showing a quote-only Company plan, and deprecated its Publish and Respond features. A small agency that wants a self-serve brand monitor with publishing cannot buy Mention without a sales call. That this leaves room for a new entrant is a guess, not a finding.
No source shows an agency willing to switch to a flat-per-workspace product. The switching case rests on pricing pages: unlimited users only start at Brand24's $299/mo Team tier and Awario's $249/mo Enterprise tier, and Syften has no per-client workspaces at all.

Find high-intent threads where your expertise is useful and answer honestly, then let replies do the selling. Syften's own case study gives the numbers: one comment produced about 70 sign-ups, worth $140 at the $2 per sign-up Reddit benchmark the founder quotes.syften.com✓
Run comparison and alternative SEO pages to catch migration intent. Brand24 publishes a Brand24 Alternatives page and For Agencies and For Marketers pages, and Syften targets Google Alerts alternative and GummySearch alternative searches. No conversion metric is published for either.syften.com✓
Offer free no-registration tools and a public directory as top-of-funnel. Brand24 runs a Brand Checker and an agency Partner Directory, and Octolens offers a free search tool and a YC-mentions directory. No conversion metric was found.news.ycombinator.com✓

Your angle & pricing wedge

Angle and pricing wedge
PieceClaimSrc
AngleA workspace that alerts only when a monitor's condition is met, a buying-intent phrase, a sentiment drop below a threshold, a complaint left unanswered for N hours, or a volume spike against a baseline, rather than emitting every keyword match, with per-source coverage health, a no-truncation history guarantee and a Slack, webhooks and MCP stream for agent triage at one flat price per workspace. Syften already ships AI filtering, an API, webhooks and MCP from $49.95 to $119.95/mo and flat-ish tiers already exist at $29 to $29.95/mo, so the only potentially new terms here are condition-based alerting, coverage-health transparency and no-truncation at a flat workspace price.
WedgeCharge one flat price per workspace, target $49 to $79/mo, for unlimited mentions, seats and client workspaces, instead of Awario's 30,000 mentions for $29/mo, Brand24's 2,000 to 100,000 mention caps at $199 to $699/mo with API at +$149, Syften's hard daily caps of 100/day Entry and 500/day PRO, or Octolens' $159 to $499/mo metered tiers at $0.01 to $0.013 per overage mention. The caps are packaging, not a cost floor, since Awario itself prices 1,000,000 mentions at about $0.00025 each, but ingestion, anti-bot and LLM costs are unaudited and incumbents can re-price.

Brand24 reached 3,800+ active clients, $3.75M annual revenue and $17.5M cumulative earnings over 10 years, with 22B+ mentions across 154 countries. The anniversary page reports the outcome but names no cause. Its SEO and content pages, free tools like the Brand Checker, and an agency partner directory likely compound into inbound demand, but no source ties any one of those to a conversion number.brand24.com✓
Syften began as a small script that alerted its founder to Reddit mentions of a phrase, was shared on Indie Hackers, and outgrew the product it was built for.Syften's About page says the script was far more popular than the tool it was created for. A free script that solves the founder's own monitoring job is itself the acquisition loop, which is why the page thanks community figures like Sean Murphy for gaining traction and Olly Meakings for marketing advice.syften.com✓
Answering high-intent threads is documented with a hard number: one HN comment produced about 70 sign-ups.Syften attributes the result to the comment's relevance to the thread, not product features. The sign-ups went to the commenter's software-screencast business, Jack Kinsella's Semicolon&Sons, not a social-listening product, and the value is capped by how many threads pass a relevance test, which is the same filtering problem the tool sells against. The Indie Hackers post reads: 'The comment got upvoted 20 times on HN and I netted about 70 signups.'indiehackers.com✓

Market heat

  • Brand24 says it has 3,800+ active clients and $3.75M annual revenue after 10 years, from its own anniversary page.

  • Bootstrapped Syften has run since 2019 on a $29.95 to $119.95/mo ladder with AI filtering, MCP, webhooks and a 1-minute Reddit target latency.

  • Awario sells a self-serve ladder from $29/mo annual for 30,000 mentions to $249/mo for 1,000,000 mentions.

  • Awario's own comparison markets by the dollar, claiming 1,932 mentions per $1 against Brand24's 649. Self-interested.

  • New AI-native entrants are arriving. Octolens launched on Hacker News as social listening AI for X, LinkedIn, Reddit and HN, and a self-hosted project, Harken, shipped there in 2026.

  • Octolens is not a low-end entrant. Pricing is $159/mo Pro for 15,000 mentions, $499/mo Scale for 50,000 and custom Enterprise, with unlimited seats and API, webhooks and MCP on all plans.

Self-serve entry spans $29/mo for Awario Starter annual with 30,000 mentions and $29.95/mo for Syften Entry capped at 100 community results/day, up to $699/mo for Brand24 Business with 100,000 mentions and $1,499/mo for Brand24 Enterprise. Mention is quote-only and Octolens starts at $159/mo annual. Whether a flat $49 to $79/mo unlimited-workspace entrant can win is unproven, because two cheap incumbents already sit below that price.

Should you build this?

The category monetizes and the pain is real, but this is not open space and flat pricing alone is not a wedge. Brand24 self-reports 3,800+ clients and $3.75M annual revenue, Syften has run since 2019 selling $29.95 to $119.95/mo, and Awario sells $29 to $249/mo self-serve tiers, while the low end already has AI filtering and MCP. The only possibly differentiated terms, condition-based alerting, coverage-health transparency, a no-truncation guarantee and flat pricing across unlimited client workspaces, are guesses, not demonstrated. Before building, recruit 20 small agencies or multi-product teams of 2 to 15 people that already pay Brand24, Awario or Syften, and capture each one's current monthly bill, keyword count and mention volume, one dated incident in the last quarter where a high-intent mention was missed, an alert was noise, or a stored mention could not be retrieved, and a paid pre-order at a flat $59/mo per workspace. Kill it if fewer than 5 of 20 pre-pay, if 8 or more report no cap, truncation or noise pain, or if teams are happy running Syften at $29.95 or a free self-hosted monitor.
