BYO-Processor Flat-Rate Shop OS

Shop-management software for independent mechanics that lets the shop keep its own card processor and pay one flat per-shop price with unlimited users and repair orders.

In plain English

What category is this?
Owners and teams buy to run day-to-day work — scheduling, projects, HR, ops. Here the focus is vertical SaaS.
The idea, briefly

Build a shop-management system for independent and mobile mechanics that (a) runs on the shop's own Stripe/Square/merchant account with no forced processor and no platform hold on funds, (b) charges one flat per-shop price with unlimited users and repair orders, and (c) sells self-serve with published pricing, a trial and a one-click structured export. Caveat: none of these is unoccupied. Tekmetric's opened pricing page already shows unlimited users and repair orders at a flat per-shop price; ARI already lets shops keep their own processor through Square/Stripe/PayPal/Helcim/360Payments integrations; and Shop-Ware is listed with unlimited users at flat tiers by a third-party Capterra listing (unverified, source 10). The BYO-processor claim is therefore not a unique capability, only a combination bet.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like Tekmetric, Shopmonkey, Shop-Ware expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: The Shopmonkey 2.0 migration broke workflows and drove multi-location shops to competitors; and a G2 reviewer reports leaving Shopmonkey after the 2.0 update. After the disaster of what they called the 2.0 update, we moved all of our locations to a competitor.'.

Integrated payments are forced and funds are held.
The subscription is felt to be too expensive for smaller independent shops, and cancellation/demo terms surprise buyers.
Per-user license fees stack on top of the subscription: Shopmonkey's opened pricing page shows 3/4/5 included user licenses by tier and '+$20 / month' per additional user.
Tekmetric's entry price is also called too expensive by a reviewer. Not the worst but just too expensive.'.
No documented source establishes that small shops actively want to leave an integrated-payments vendor for a BYO-processor product,

Should you build this?

Real, verbatim pain exists, but most of it is unopened: a BBB complaint reports a forced in-house processor that holds funds 2-3 days (source 6, an checked source but only one complaint in three years, so a single-source signal), reviewers say the 2.0 migration pushed multi-location shops to competitors (sources 4, 5, both search snippets that could not be opened), and there are 'steep for a smaller independent shop' / 'too expensive' complaints (sources 7, 8, both unopenable search snippets). The category demonstrably monetizes: Shopmonkey's own opened pricing page states 8,000+ shops and Sacra, a third-party research firm, estimates $45M ARR in 2023 (source 3, unaudited); Advance Auto Parts named Tekmetric its recommended system covering 15,000+ TechNet-affiliated shops; and both publish live prices from $199-499/mo. The problem is that the proposed wedge is already partly occupied, which the sources themselves show: unlimited-user flat pricing already ships from Tekmetric (source 1, opened), and ARI - a low-cost competitor at $39.99-$59.99/mo with a free trial and 4,000+ shops - already lets shops keep their own processor through Square, Stripe, PayPal, Helcim and 360Payments integrations (source 11, opened). The only piece not obviously commoditized is the combination of BYO-processor, unlimited users and one-click self-serve export, and that combination is not uniquely available either. The payments rationale is also weaker than a simple undercut: the shop still pays card fees on its own processor, so the avoidable amount is only an incumbent's spread above the shop's own processing cost, not Sacra's full 2.5-2.9% vendor take.
