The idea, briefly

Build the cheapest, cleanest way to read and understand real content in your target language: bring any URL, EPUB, PDF or subtitle file and get instant tap-to-see look-ups, grammar and progress — with a generous free tier, no library lock-in and none of the coloured-word clutter.

What buyers expect

People comparing tools like LingQ, Satori Reader, Manabi Reader expect the basics to work without surprise fees or missing pieces. The loud complaints are: Intermediate readers cannot find content at their level: a B1+ Spanish self-learner wrote that 'Most texts for natives, even children's books like Harry Potter, are still very slow/difficult to read' and asked for help finding things 'only ~5% unknown words'. The; and the LingQ reading experience is disliked by serious readers: Readlang's founder called LingQ 'a bit expensive ($10 / month)' with 'too much clutter', and added 'I don't like having all the words I know/don't know highlighted in the text, it distracts me from enjoying the content.' The scenario: a reader wants a clean view and is put off by a wall of coloured words. Should you build this?

If you have outgrown beginner apps and want to read real articles, books or subtitles, today's tools are pricey or clunky: LingQ runs $8.99–14.99 a month and makes you paste in raw text, Satori Reader is Japanese-only at $9 a month, and Duolingo leaves people unable to read at all. The opening is a bring-your-own-content reader for the many languages the big apps serve thinly, priced around $3 a month with a free tier that is actually usable, and a clean reading view instead of a wall of coloured words. Manabi Reader shows a solo developer can be sustained by this model (a single self-reported $500+/month datapoint, not proof that the model works), but the honest risk is churn: commenters on Readlang's launch warned that intermediate learners quit before they get far, so do not spend money on a giant content library. If a few dozen paying readers do not stick past that point, narrow to one language or pick a different wedge.
